Sloam

nounStandard termMining

A band of clay or soft shale occurring between seams of coal.

A layer of barren, earthy material that separates workable coal beds. This soft parting rock must often be mined along with the coal and separated later in the wash plant, increasing the ash content of the run-of-mine product and sometimes causing roof stability issues.

Heard on the job

The upper seam is good quality, but there's a foot of sloam before you hit the lower split.
