Random

nounStandard termMining

The general direction or strike of a steeply dipping rake-vein.

A historic geological term denoting the horizontal bearing or strike of a mineral vein, particularly a rake-vein that cuts across the country rock. Miners used the random to track the expected path of the ore body and plan their drifts and crosscuts accordingly.
