A concentrated zone of mineralized rock that fills a fissure or crack in the host geology. Unlike disseminated deposits where ore is scattered, a lode has distinct structural boundaries, making it a prime target for underground mining methods that follow the vein.
The old-timers chased the main lode down to the 500 level before the water got too deep to pump.
In historic mining law, discovering a distinct lode granted specific rights to follow the vein downward, even if it dipped under a neighbor's surface property.
