Pineapple opal

nounStandard termMining

A rare, spiky formation of opal pseudomorphing after another mineral crystal.

A highly sought-after formation of precious opal that takes the shape of a spiky, radiating cluster resembling a pineapple. These are pseudomorphs, meaning the silica gel that formed the opal filled a cavity left by a dissolving crystal cluster, typically ikaite or glauberite. They are almost exclusively found in the White Cliffs opal fields of Australia and are prized by collectors for their unique morphology.
