Longwall

nounStandard termMining

An underground coal mining method that extracts a wide panel in a single continuous slice.

Longwall mining is a highly productive underground method where a mechanical shearer cuts back and forth across a coal face that can be hundreds of meters wide. Hydraulic roof supports protect the machinery and workers, advancing with the cut and allowing the roof behind them to intentionally collapse into the mined-out void.

Heard on the job

The shearer on the longwall is down for maintenance, so production is halted for the next four hours.
