Blankholder

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A clamping ring or plate that grips the edges of sheet metal during deep drawing.

A heavy plate or ring in a stamping press that applies controlled pressure to the outer edges of a sheet metal blank. As the punch pushes the center of the metal into the die cavity, the blankholder prevents the edges from wrinkling while allowing the material to flow smoothly inward. Setting the correct blankholder pressure is critical to avoid tearing or buckling the part.

Heard on the job

If you get wrinkles on the flange of that pan, you need to increase the blankholder pressure.
