An early direct-acting steam pump design where the steam cylinder sits vertically directly above the pump shaft, driving it without a walking beam. The steam stroke lifts the heavy pump rods, and gravity forces them down to displace the water. This design was once common in deep mine drainage before more compact rotary pumps replaced it.
