Ejector

nounStandard termMechanical

A fluid pump that uses a high-pressure jet to entrain and move a secondary fluid.

This device relies on the Venturi effect to create a low-pressure zone using a motive fluid, such as steam or compressed air. The pressure drop draws in a secondary gas or liquid, mixing the two streams and discharging them together. Engineers use them to pull vacuums, prime centrifugal pumps, or exhaust gases without requiring moving mechanical parts.

Heard on the job

We lost vacuum on the main condenser because the steam ejector nozzle is fouled.

Insider tip

Because they have no moving parts, they are highly reliable in harsh chemical environments, but they are generally less energy-efficient than mechanical pumps.
