Antiplane

adjectiveStandard termMechanical

Describing a deformation state where all displacement occurs perpendicular to a two-dimensional plane of interest.

In solid mechanics, this is a specific boundary condition used to simplify the analysis of shear stresses. It assumes that the material only deforms along the longitudinal axis (out of the plane), with zero displacement in the transverse directions, which is highly useful when modeling long shafts under pure torsion or specific crack propagation modes.

Heard on the job

We can reduce the computational load by treating the shaft torsion as an antiplane shear problem in the solver.
