Board

nounStandard termMaritime

The straight-line distance a sailing vessel travels on a single tack.

The leg or distance a sailing vessel runs on one continuous tack while beating upwind. When a ship must zigzag against the wind, each straight segment of the zigzag is a board. A captain will plan long or short boards depending on sea room, currents, and shifting wind patterns to make the most efficient progress toward the destination.
