Workpiece

nounStandard termMachine Shop

The physical block of raw material or partially finished part being machined.

The chunk of metal, plastic, or other material that is clamped in the machine and actively being shaped. It is the target of the cutting operation, distinct from the cutting tools, the workholding fixtures, and the machine itself. Once all manufacturing steps are complete, it becomes the finished part.

Heard on the job

Make sure the workpiece is seated flat on the parallels before you tighten the vise.

Insider tip

Always deburr the edges before flipping it over for the second operation, or it will never sit flat in the vise.
