Rumble strip

nounStandard termLogistics

A series of raised or grooved patterns on a roadway edge designed to alert inattentive drivers.

Highway designers install rumble strips along the shoulders or centerlines of high-speed roads as a tactile and audible warning system. When a vehicle tire passes over the milled corrugations, it generates severe vibration and a loud humming noise in the cabin. They are a proven countermeasure against run-off-road collisions and lane departure crashes caused by driver fatigue.
