Greenout

nounShop talkLogistics

A blank patch of reflective green sheeting used to cover up obsolete text on a highway guide sign.

Highway maintenance crews use these adhesive overlays to hide discontinued route numbers, closed exits, or changed destinations without replacing the entire aluminum sign panel. The patch matches the standard retroreflective green background of the existing sign. Over time, UV fading often causes the patched area to stand out visibly from the older sheeting around it.

Grab a sheet of greenout and cover that old toll rate before the morning rush.

Insider tip

Drivers can usually spot a greenout at night because the fresh retroreflective material shines much brighter than the weathered sign around it.
