Carrying capacity

nounStandard termLogistics

The maximum weight or volume of cargo and passengers a vehicle is rated to transport safely.

This metric defines the legal and structural limit of a vehicle, calculated by subtracting the curb weight from the gross vehicle weight rating. Exceeding this limit stresses the suspension, brakes, and tires, leading to equipment failure and regulatory fines. In transit, it also dictates the maximum passenger load before a bus or train is considered overcrowded.
