Concavo-convex

adjectiveStandard termLighting

Describing a lens that curves inward on one side and outward on the other.

A concavo-convex lens features one concave surface and one convex surface. Also known as a meniscus lens, this shape is commonly used in complex optical assemblies and condenser trains to minimize spherical aberration while controlling the focal length. The overall positive or negative optical power depends on which surface has the steeper curvature.

Heard on the job

The condenser assembly uses a concavo-convex element to gather the beam without adding too much spherical distortion.
