Conformal optics

nounStandard termLighting

Optical elements shaped to match the aerodynamic or structural contours of their housing.

Conformal optics are lenses or windows designed primarily to fit the physical, aerodynamic, or aesthetic requirements of an enclosure rather than traditional spherical geometries. Because these exterior shapes often introduce severe optical aberrations, engineers must use complex internal corrective elements or advanced software processing to restore image or beam quality.

Heard on the job

The architectural fixture uses conformal optics so the lens sits flush with the curved facade of the building.
