Face load factor

nounStandard termGears

A rating factor that raises calculated stress to cover uneven load distribution across the face width.

A multiplier in gear rating, usually between about 1.1 and 2, that accounts for load concentrated toward part of the face width instead of spread evenly. Misalignment, shaft and housing deflection, helix errors and face width to diameter ratio drive it up. Wide, flexible gears get large factors, and crowning or helix correction is the usual way to bring it down.

Heard on the job

Face load factor came out at 1.8 with the overhung pinion, that kills the rating, add a bearing or crown the teeth.
