Triple

nounShop talkFire & Safety

A fire engine equipped with a pump, a water tank, and a complement of hose.

A triple combination engine is the standard pumper apparatus used by most fire departments. The term refers to the three primary components it carries: a fire pump to generate pressure, a water tank for initial attack, and a bed of fire hose for establishing a continuous water supply. While nearly all standard engines built over the last century fit this description, the shorthand remains a common way to distinguish a standard pumper from specialized apparatus like quints or rescue trucks.
