A fox is a small metal wedge inserted into a slot at the embedded end of a bolt or pin. As the fastener is driven to the bottom of a blind hole, the wedge is forced up into the slot, expanding the shank outward. This creates a tight friction fit against the walls of the hole, permanently anchoring the hardware.
