When a woody plant is aggressively pruned or coppiced down to a low stump, the remaining rootstock and base form this structure. It stores the plant's energy and responds to the severe cut by sending up a dense cluster of vigorous, straight new stems. Orchardists and nursery workers use this technique to propagate rootstocks or harvest uniform poles.

Insider tip
A healthy stool can remain productive for decades if the cuts are made cleanly and at the correct angle to shed water.
