Strip cropping

nounStandard termFarming

Planting different crops in alternating narrow bands across a field.

An agricultural conservation method where a field is divided into long, narrow bands, and different crops are planted in alternating strips. Farmers typically alternate a row crop, like corn, with a cover crop or forage, like alfalfa. This layout breaks up the flow of wind and water across the soil surface, drastically reducing erosion on sloped land.
