Under this traditional communal farming method, individual peasant farmers cultivated dispersed strips of land within massive shared fields. The community agreed on crop rotations and fallow periods, allowing livestock to graze on the stubble across the entire field after harvest. It was eventually replaced by enclosure, which consolidated land into private, fenced farms.
