Solid-state battery

nounStandard termEnergy

An energy storage device that uses a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid or gel.

A battery architecture where ions travel between the anode and cathode through a solid material, such as ceramics, glass, or solid polymers. This design eliminates the flammable liquid solvents found in conventional lithium ion cells, drastically reducing fire risks and allowing for higher energy densities. They are heavily researched for next-generation electric vehicles and grid storage.

Heard on the job

If the new solid-state battery prototypes pass the thermal runaway tests, we can eliminate the heavy cooling jackets entirely.
