OPC

abbreviationShop talkElectrotechnology

A standard software interface that allows industrial control hardware to share data with Windows-based applications.

OPC (originally OLE for Process Control) is a set of communication protocols used to bridge proprietary SCADA systems, PLCs, and historian databases. It acts as a universal translator so devices from different vendors can exchange real-time plant data. Because it relies heavily on Windows network security and DCOM settings, connections often break silently, earning it a reputation for being fragile and frustrating to troubleshoot.

Heard on the job

The historian isn't logging any breaker operations because the OPC server lost its connection to the RTU.

Insider tip

When an OPC connection fails on the shop floor, technicians often joke that it stands for 'Oh Please Connect'.
