Magnetic moment

nounStandard termElectrotechnology

A vector quantity dictating how a magnetic object aligns with an external magnetic field.

A measure of the magnetic strength and orientation of a magnet or current-carrying loop. It determines the torque the object will experience when placed in an external magnetic field. In electrical machine design, calculating the magnetic moments of rotor coils or permanent magnets is fundamental to determining the torque output and efficiency of motors and generators.
