The component in an electrical machine responsible for establishing the stationary or rotating magnetic flux. In large industrial machines, this is usually an electromagnet formed by field coils wound around an iron core. Its strength dictates the fundamental operating characteristics of the machine, such as torque capacity and voltage generation.

The old dynamo uses a massive cast-iron field magnet that takes up half the housing.
