Ohmic resistance

nounStandard termElectrotechnology

The pure direct-current resistance of a conductor or component.

The component of electrical impedance that dissipates energy as heat, governed purely by the physical dimensions, material resistivity, and temperature of the conductor. It excludes frequency-dependent effects like inductive reactance, capacitive reactance, and the skin effect. It is the baseline resistance measured with a standard DC ohmmeter.

Heard on the job

We need to measure the ohmic resistance of the stator windings before we apply the high-voltage test.

Also heard as

  • DC resistance

Do not mix it up with

  • Impedance: Ohmic resistance is strictly the DC component, while impedance includes AC reactive components.
