An older design of three-phase power cable where the individual paper-insulated cores are bundled together and wrapped in an outer belt of oil-impregnated paper before the lead sheath is applied. The design creates a non-radial electric field that stresses the insulation in the spaces between the cores, limiting its use to voltages below 22 kV.
The fault record shows a phase-to-phase short in the old 11 kV belted cable section under the high street.
