The voltage available across the terminals of a load when it is connected to a power source and drawing current. It is always lower than the open-circuit voltage of the source because of the voltage drop across the internal resistance of the supply and the wiring.
Heard on the job
The battery reads 12 volts open, but the load voltage drops to 9 volts as soon as the compressor kicks on.
