The union of separate wire ends to form a continuous circuit. A proper joint requires stripping the insulation, mechanically twisting or crimping the copper, and securing the connection with a wire nut, Wago, or split-bolt. Code strictly mandates that all such connections must remain accessible inside an approved enclosure.
You can't leave a splice buried in the drywall, you have to cut in a junction box.
