An apprentice is enrolled in a training program that combines paid jobsite work under supervision with classroom study of theory, code and safety. Programs usually run four or five years and step up by year or by hours, with pay rising from around 40 or 50 percent of the journeyman rate. Apprentices carry material, dig trenches and bend a lot of pipe, and are expected to learn the reason behind every task.
First-year apprentice is on the wire cart, keep him pulling and show him how to read the panel schedule.
