Stripe coat

nounStandard termCorrosion

Extra coat brushed onto edges, welds, bolts and corners to build thickness where spray runs thin.

A separate application, usually by brush, to the places spray coats miss or thin out: edges, welds, bolt heads and nuts, cutouts, crevices and back-to-back angles. Surface tension pulls wet coating away from sharp edges, so an edge can end up with a fraction of the film on the flat plate. Many specs require a stripe coat in a contrasting color under each full coat so inspectors can see it was done.

Heard on the job

Every weld and bolt head gets a stripe coat in red before the gray goes on, no exceptions.
