Bright

adjectiveShop talkCorrosion

Describing a metal surface that is completely bare, clean, and free of any protective coating, oxide, or mill scale.

A state of metal where surface preparation has removed all rust, scale, and previous coatings, exposing the raw, shiny base material. In this condition, the metal is highly reactive and vulnerable to immediate flash rusting if exposed to moisture or high humidity. It requires rapid application of a primer or protective layer.

Heard on the job

We blasted the spool piece to a bright finish, so get the primer on it before the humidity spikes.

Insider tip

A bright surface will turn brown with flash rust in less than an hour if the dew point is too close to the ambient temperature.
