Neatline

nounStandard termBuilding

The theoretical boundary line defining the exact intended dimensions of an excavation or concrete pour.

The theoretical boundary line shown on project plans that defines the exact limits of an excavation, concrete structure, or masonry work. It ignores the natural irregularities of the rock or material. Contractors are typically paid for material removed or placed exactly up to the neatline, making it a strict boundary for billing.

Heard on the job

We hit some loose shale and over-excavated, but the client is only paying for the concrete up to the neatline.
