Wheelbarrow

verbShop talkAviation

A landing error where the aircraft's weight is forced onto the nose gear.

To inadvertently shift the weight of a tricycle-gear aircraft forward onto the nosewheel during landing or takeoff roll. This usually happens when a pilot forces the nose down too early or lands with excess speed and forward elevator pressure. It severely reduces main gear traction for braking and directional control, often leading to a runway excursion.

Heard on the job

He tried to force it down halfway down the runway and started wheelbarrowing, nearly taking out the edge lights.

Insider tip

If you start wheelbarrowing, the immediate fix is to apply back pressure on the yoke to transfer weight back to the main gear, or execute a go-around.
