Umbilicus

nounStandard termAviation

A rigid or flexible transfer tube connecting a spacecraft to a mothership or station.

A physical conduit linking two spacecraft, or a spacecraft and a ground facility, designed for transferring fluids, gases, or data. While similar to an umbilical cord, this term often appears in technical schematics for rigid fuel transfer booms or specialized sample return mechanisms. It ensures an airtight or leak-proof seal during transfer operations.
