Pull-out

nounStandard termAviation

A flight maneuver to arrest a descent and return an aircraft to level flight.

An aggressive flight maneuver where the pilot applies aft control stick pressure to bring an aircraft out of a steep dive. This rapidly increases the angle of attack, generating high lift and pulling positive G-forces on the airframe and crew. It is the critical recovery phase following a tactical dive, aerobatic loop, or emergency descent.

Heard on the job

Watch your airspeed on the descent and initiate the pull-out before you hit the hard deck.

Insider tip

A delayed pull-out at high speed can overstress the airframe or result in a high-speed stall if the pilot pulls back too abruptly.
