Red light camera

nounStandard termAutomotive

An automated traffic enforcement device that photographs vehicles entering an intersection after the signal turns red.

A camera system linked to a traffic signal and sensors in the road surface. If a vehicle crosses the stop line after the light has turned red, the system triggers a camera to capture the license plate and the driver's face. The resulting images are used to issue traffic citations by mail.

Heard on the job

I tried to beat the yellow on 4th Street but saw the flash of the red light camera right as I crossed the line.
