Intake silencer

nounStandard termAutomotive

A baffled chamber or resonator in the air intake system designed to muffle engine induction noise.

A molded plastic chamber or series of baffles integrated into the factory air intake ducting. It uses acoustic resonance to cancel out the low-frequency booming sounds generated by air rushing into the engine cylinders. Performance enthusiasts often remove these devices to increase engine noise and slightly improve airflow, though factory designs rarely restrict power significantly.

Heard on the job

The customer wants more engine growl, so we're bypassing the factory intake silencer with a straight tube.
