Stripping

nounStandard termAsphalt

Loss of the binder's bond to the aggregate surface, caused by moisture working into the mix.

Moisture damage in which water gets between the binder film and the aggregate and pries the binder loose, often starting inside the layer where nobody sees it. A stripped core shows bare, uncoated stone and crumbles easily, and surface symptoms include raveling, rutting and potholes. Mixes are screened with TSR and Hamburg tests, and siliceous and other strip-prone aggregates are protected with hydrated lime or liquid amine anti-strip.
