Material transfer vehicle, a self-propelled unit that takes mix from trucks or a windrow, holds a surge supply in its own storage, remixes it with augers and conveys it into an insert in the paver hopper. Trucks never touch the paver, so the paver can keep moving, and the remixing breaks up thermal and gradation segregation. Many agencies require one on high-volume or smoothness-incentive work.
Put the MTV on the shoulder side and keep it full, I don't want the paver stopping once on this ride-spec job.
A paver fed by an MTV can run all day without stopping, and the smoothness numbers on those jobs usually show it.
