A lab furnace that burns off the asphalt from a loose mix sample at about 538 C, weighing the sample continuously until the loss stops. The mass lost, adjusted by a calibration factor for aggregate that also burns or breaks down, is the binder content. The clean aggregate left in the basket then goes through the sieves for gradation, so one burn answers the two numbers a QC tech checks every sublot.
Ignition oven's tripping the breaker again, run the burn on the backup unit or we're going to miss the sublot.
Aggregates like dolomite lose mass in the oven, so every new mix needs its own correction factor before the numbers mean anything.
