PURL
PURL turns up in 2 fields: printing, textiles. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
PURL in printing
A personalized uniform resource locator printed on direct mail to track individual recipient responses.
A PURL (Personalized Uniform Resource Locator) is a unique web address generated for a specific person and printed on their copy of a direct mail piece. Variable data software pulls names from a mailing list and assigns each a custom link, usually combining a domain name with a unique code. When the target types the link into a browser, the system tracks their engagement and directs them to a customized landing page.
"Make sure the variable data file maps the names correctly to the PURL field before we send this postcard batch to the press."
Purl in textiles
To create a knitting stitch by pulling a loop of yarn through the front of the work.
To form a fundamental knitting stitch where the working yarn is held in front of the needles. The knitter inserts the right needle from right to left into the front loop of the stitch on the left needle, wraps the yarn, and pulls the new loop backward through the old stitch. It produces a horizontal bump on the fabric surface.
"Just knit the right side rows and purl the wrong side rows to get stockinette."
