Pipe

Pipe turns up in 2 fields: electricians, metallurgy. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Electricians' Slang

Pipe in electricians

Shop word for conduit of any kind, and as a verb for installing it, as in pipe it.

Pipe is how electricians refer to conduit in general, whether EMT, rigid or PVC. A pipe job is one where wire is pulled into installed raceway, as opposed to a cable job with Romex or MC, and running pipe is a skill judged by how straight, plumb and cleanly bent a run looks. Electricians who mostly install conduit get called pipe benders by other trades.

"Garage is getting piped in EMT, the owner wants to add circuits later without opening any walls."

Metallurgy, Foundry & Forge

Pipe in metallurgy

To form a deep shrinkage cavity in the top center of a solidifying ingot.

The tendency of molten metal to contract as it freezes, drawing liquid down from the top center of the casting or ingot. This leaves a hollow, funnel-shaped void that must be cropped off before forging or rolling to prevent internal defects in the final product.

"The top of that ingot piped severely because the hot top didn't retain enough heat."
