Layback

Layback turns up in 2 fields: hydrography, telecom & it. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Hydrography & Charting

Layback in hydrography

How far astern of its tow point a towed sensor actually rides, measured horizontally.

How far aft of the tow point the towfish actually sits. It is usually calculated from cable out, tow point height and fish depth, assuming a straight cable or a simple catenary, and applied along the vessel's track to position the sonar data. Wrong layback shifts every contact along track and makes one object appear in two places on reciprocal lines.

"Contacts are 20 metres apart on the reciprocal lines, layback must be off by about ten."

Telecom, Networking & IT

Layback in telecom & it

The process of recording a final, mixed audio track back onto the master video medium.

The final step in audio post-production for broadcast or video, where the finished, mixed audio track is recorded back onto the master video file or tape. This process ensures the sound is perfectly synchronized with the picture before the final product is distributed or aired. It requires strict adherence to timecodes to prevent lip-sync errors.

"The sound mix is approved, so let's schedule the layback for tomorrow morning before we send the master to the network."
