Hickey
Hickey turns up in 2 fields: electricians, printing. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Hickey in electricians
Short-headed hand bender for rigid conduit, and also the threaded fitting that hangs a fixture from a box stud.
A hickey has two meanings. The conduit hickey is a hand bender with a compact head and long handle used on rigid and IMC to make small bends, kicks and offsets in tight spots, working the pipe a little at a time along its length instead of around a fixed shoe. The fixture hickey is a small threaded fitting that joins a fixture stud in a ceiling box to the stem or chain of a hanging light, with a side opening for the wires.
"No room for the bender in there, grab the hickey and walk a little kick into that rigid by hand."
Hickey in printing
A printing defect appearing as a small spot or halo on the printed sheet.
A circular spot or halo that appears in solid areas of printed ink. It is caused by dried ink skin, paper dust, or dirt sticking to the printing plate or offset blanket. The debris blocks ink transfer in a small radius, leaving a dark center surrounded by an unprinted white ring.
"We've a massive hickey in the cyan solid on page four, so stop the press and wash the blanket."
