Gearhead

Gearhead turns up in 2 fields: gears, automotive. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Gear Engineering

Gearhead in gears

A compact gear reducer that bolts to a motor face, and also a person who lives for machinery.

In motion control, a gearhead is a small precision reducer, often planetary, that mounts directly to a servo or stepper motor to multiply torque and match inertia, rated by ratio, torque and backlash in arc-minutes. In general speech it is an enthusiast obsessed with engines, drivetrains and machines. Both senses are heard in the same building.

"Spec a ten-to-one planetary gearhead with under five arc-minutes of backlash, or the axis will hunt at standstill."

Auto Repair & Cars

Gearhead in automotive

An automotive enthusiast deeply interested in the mechanical workings of cars.

A person with a deep, consuming passion for automobiles, specifically focusing on mechanics, modifications, and performance tuning. They typically spend their free time wrenching on project cars, researching parts, and discussing engine specifications rather than just driving.

"We need a real gearhead to figure out this custom wiring harness, not just a parts replacer."
