Gallery

Gallery turns up in 2 fields: lighting, automotive. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Lighting & Color Science

Gallery in lighting

An elevated lighting position in a theater or studio, typically running along the side walls.

A raised walkway or platform inside a theater, studio, or soundstage used for mounting lighting fixtures and routing cables. Galleries allow electricians and lighting technicians to adjust, focus, and maintain elevated lights without needing ladders or lifts. They are often designated by their position, such as the fly gallery or side gallery.

"Send a couple of electricians up to the stage right gallery to re-gel those side washes."

Auto Repair & Cars

Gallery in automotive

An internal passageway machined into an engine block or cylinder head to distribute pressurized oil.

An oil gallery is a drilled or cast channel inside an engine block or cylinder head that routes pressurized lubricating oil to critical moving parts. The main oil gallery runs the length of the block, feeding the main bearings, camshaft, and lifters. If a gallery becomes clogged with sludge or debris, the downstream components will rapidly fail from oil starvation.

"We need to pull the core plugs and brush out the main oil gallery before sending the block to the machine shop."
