Fired
Fired turns up in 2 fields: ceramics & glass, shop slang. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Fired in ceramics & glass
Describes clay or glass that has been permanently hardened by heat in a kiln.
The state of a ceramic or glass object after it has undergone heat treatment sufficient to change its chemical structure. For clay, this means the water of plasticity and chemical water have been driven off, transforming it from a soluble material into a permanent, hard body. The term distinguishes finished or semi-finished work from raw greenware.
"Be careful loading the shelves because these bowls are only bisque fired and still pretty fragile."
Fired in shop slang
The permanent termination of a worker from their employment.
The involuntary dismissal of an employee from a job, typically due to poor performance, safety violations, or insubordination. Unlike a layoff, which is driven by business conditions, this action is a direct consequence of the worker's behavior or failure to meet standards. It results in the immediate loss of access to the site, return of company gear, and a final paycheck.
"If safety catches you working on that panel without locking it out, you'll be fired on the spot."
