ERS
ERS turns up in 2 fields: hydrography, automotive. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
ERS in hydrography
Ellipsoidally referenced survey: depths taken from GNSS ellipsoid heights and converted to chart datum with a separation model.
Ellipsoidally referenced surveying uses high-accuracy GNSS heights of the vessel to measure the seabed relative to the ellipsoid, then converts to chart datum through a separation model. Because the vessel's height is measured directly, errors from tides, squat, draft change and long-period heave largely drop out. It depends on RTK or PPK heights and a sound separation model, and it removes the need for zoned tides far from gauges.
"We're running ERS on this job, so no tide gauges, just the separation surface and PPK."
ERS in automotive
The energy recovery system captures waste heat and kinetic energy to boost acceleration.
The energy recovery system is a complex hybrid powertrain component, most notably used in Formula One, that scavenges otherwise wasted energy from the brakes and exhaust. It stores this energy in a battery pack and deploys it through electric motors connected to the drivetrain and turbocharger, providing a massive temporary horsepower boost.
"We lost ERS deployment on the back straight, so he's down about 160 horsepower."
